Our body has 12 meridians on which 361 acupuncture points lie.
“Acupuncture assumes the existence of vital energy, the “Qi” (pronounced “chee”), essential for life to circulate throughout the body via a network of meridians. These meridians carry energy around the body.” Acupuncture points are found along the path of the meridians at specific locations.
Neck and/or Shoulder Pain aka “Tech Neck” – In TCM neck and shoulder pain is caused by wind and cold, overexertion and blood stasis or Liver and Kidney deficiency. Acupuncture is used to dispel wind and cold, stretch tendons and activate blood or nourish and strengthen the liver and kidneys to relieve the pain. Cupping along with acupuncture is recommended. Moxibustion is also sometimes used. A suggested initial course of treatment is 2 times per week for 3 weeks, then 1 time per week for 3 weeks. Therapeutic results differ based on etiological factors.

Acupuncture is one of the most common and dependable medical therapies used around the world. It is the oldest continuously practiced medical system in the world, used by nearly one third of the planet’s people as a primary health care system or as a supplemental therapy. It is by nature simple, safe and accessible health care. Acupuncture can be a powerfully effective and naturally relaxing form of medicine.
The needles are the size of hair and most do not feel them entering their skin.
Very thin, solid, hairlike needles are inserted at specific points on the body. The stimulation of these acupuncture points affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It stimulates the release of chemicals such as endorphins which help with pain and stress.
Yes, more and more insurance companies actually do cover medical acupuncture as it is difficult to oppose current studies showing acupuncture’s benefit. As with all her services, Dr. Chan can provide you with a receipt and breakdown of the service and you can request reimbursement from your insurance company. (Dr. Chan will be considered an out-of-network provider.)
Dr. Chan sees the benefit of using acupuncture and wants to make it as accessible as possible to you. Some people schedule a weekly appointment in the acupuncture room.
Dr. Chan sees the benefit of using No. We use disposable needles. They come in sterilized packages, we use them once, then we dispose of them in an approved container. room.
A typical acupuncture visit lasts about 45-60 minutes.
After checking in at the front desk and completing some paperwork, you will go to the acupuncture room and make yourself comfortable. After a brief conversation between the patient and practitioner, we may take your pulse and look at your tongue. Depending on a variety of factors, a specific point prescription is selected. Typically after this time people feel very sleepy and will nap for a while.
Please wear comfortable clothing. You’ll just have to roll your sleeves and pant legs up, in order to get ready for your treatment, as we use styles of acupuncture which allows us to select points primarily on the arms and legs.
We play quiet, relaxing music in the treatment room, but feel free to bring in headphones if you would like to listen to your own music.
Schedule an appointment! Dr. Chan will personalize a session for you. She has small magnetic beads that can be taped to your skin in acupressure points instead of using a needle; however, showing you how small the needle is and the very small depth it enters the skin may help eliminate your fears.
